Philadelphia Family Trip - Part One

by Jared Wayland

Travelling with a family is always an adventure, but doing so in a powerchair can add a unique set of challenges and joys. As we embarked on our trip from St. Catharines to Philadelphia, we made accessibility a priority at every stop. Here’s a blog about our accessible adventure, made even more special with my parents, our son's loving grandparents, accompanying us.

Day 1: From St. Catharines to Hershey, PA   Our journey began in the early hours of the morning. Armed with coffee and a sense of excitement, we set off in our accessible van. After several hours on the road and only one stop along the way, we arrived at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania by early afternoon.

I had actually been to Hershey Lodge when I was a kid, and it is still a delightful destination, especially for families. The indoor water park was a big hit, featuring water slides, a splash zone, and a wave pool. My son couldn’t get enough of it, and it was reassuring to see the facility's emphasis on safety and accessibility throughout. The hotel was incredibly accommodating as well, with our room being fully accessible, making it easy for me to navigate with my Stretto. The bathroom is equipped with grab bars and a roll-in shower, ensuring comfort and independence.

The Lodge also offered a range of activities for kids, from storytime sessions to arts and crafts. My son had the thrill of meeting some Hershey Chocolate characters, which quickly became the highlight of his day. Having my parents there was also a great help; they provided extra hands to keep an eye on our son and made sure everyone had a great time. It was an early night, ready for more adventures the following day.
