A Day at Safari Niagara with Lennon and Leighton: Accessibility and Adventure

by Lennon Ferri's Mom

Last weekend, my daughters Lennon and Leighton embarked on a much-anticipated trip to Safari Niagara. This visit was not just about experiencing the exotic animals and thrilling exhibits, but also about navigating the park for the first time with Lennon’s Stretto.

As we entered Safari Niagara, the girls’ excitement was palpable. Lennon, with her adventurous spirit, led the way, eager to see the animals. Leighton, her ever-enthusiastic sister, matched her pace, ready to explore every corner of the zoo.

The zoo’s layout was fairly accommodating, with wide pathways that allowed Lennon to maneuver comfortably. The animal enclosures were thoughtfully designed, providing excellent visibility for all visitors, including those with different mobility needs. From the majestic lions to the playful monkeys, the girls were enthralled by the diverse wildlife.

While the overall accessibility of Safari Niagara was commendable, our visit highlighted some areas needing improvement. The main pathways and exhibit areas were accessible, but we encountered challenges with some of the secondary paths, which were narrower and bumpier and more difficult for Lennon to navigate.

One significant issue was the lack of accessible bathrooms. Throughout our visit, we struggled to find restrooms that could accommodate Lennon’s power chair. This not only caused inconvenience but also dampened the otherwise joyful experience. Accessible facilities are crucial for ensuring that everyone can enjoy a day out without unnecessary stress or discomfort.

Despite these challenges, Lennon’s Stretto proved to be a reliable companion. Its compact design and advanced maneuverability allowed Lennon to explore the zoo with confidence. The power chair’s capabilities made it easier to tackle uneven terrains and inclines, ensuring that Lennon could participate fully in the day’s adventures.

The highlight of the day was the giraffe feeding session. Lennon and Leighton’s faces lit up as they fed the gentle giants

Our visit to Safari Niagara was a mix of delightful experiences and valuable lessons. It underscored the importance of accessibility in public spaces and the need for continuous improvements to ensure inclusivity. While we enjoyed our time at the zoo, we hope that our feedback will contribute to making future visits more accessible for everyone.

As we left the zoo, Lennon and Leighton were already planning their next adventure. With Lennon’s Stretto and more awareness about accessibility needs, we are ready to explore more of the world together, one adventure at a time.
