This past weekend, our family packed up for a fun-filled day at Happy Rolph’s Petting Zoo and accessible playground. With the sun shining brightly, Lennon, Leighton, my husband, and I were ready to enjoy some fresh air, furry friends, and outdoor adventures. It was one of those perfect days where you can feel the excitement in the air, especially with Lennon leading the way in her Stretto!
As we rolled into the zoo area, Lennon’s eyes lit up at the sight of the animals. The petting zoo had everything from goats and ducks to pigs and sheep. Lennon was thrilled, her smile widening every time we approached a new animal. Leighton, her little sister, darted ahead, eagerly pointing out all the animals she wanted to pet, making sure Lennon didn’t miss anything.
What we love most about Happy Rolph’s is how accessible it is for everyone. Because of the Stretto’s narrow base & iLevel feature Lennon was able to get right up to the fences and see all the animals up close. The goats were especially interested in the girls and the Stretto, getting as close as they could for a good look! Watching Lennon confidently navigate the pathways in her Stretto, we could tell she felt included in all the fun, just like every other kid there.
After the petting zoo, we made our way down to the pond, where ducks and geese were not so patiently waiting for some bird food. Lennon was excited to feed them, so we brought out the bird-friendly treats we had purchased back at the petting zoo.
Lennon moved smoothly down the path to the pond’s edge, maneuvering her power chair like a pro. She loved how the geese and ducks waddled over to her, eagerly snapping up the food she tossed their way. It was such a peaceful moment, with the gentle breeze rippling across the water and the sounds of nature all around us. Leighton, of course, made a game out of seeing which bird could eat the fastest! Watching the girls enjoy this together, sharing laughs and squeals of delight, made the day feel extra special.
After feeding the birds, we headed over to the playground, which had quickly become one of Lennon’s favourite spots. The fully accessible design means she can jump into the fun without missing a beat.
Lennon’s favourite part of the playground is always the swings, and Happy Rolph’s didn’t disappoint. She zoomed over to the big, comfy swings, and with some help from Dad, she was flying high in no time, giggling as the wind rushed past her. But this time, the giant boat rocker gave the swings a run for their money! Lennon and Leighton climbed aboard the boat together, laughing as it rocked back and forth, and we could tell it was a tough choice for Lennon—both were just too much fun!
As the afternoon ended, we found a shady spot near the pond to sit and relax. The girls shared a snack while we watched the ducks glide across the water. Lennon chatted excitedly about the animals she saw and her favourite playground moments, bouncing between the swings and the boat rocker as her top picks. Leighton, never one to be left out, jumped in with her own highlights of the day, the rock wall and racing Lennon down the aisle of the petting zoo, making it clear they both had an absolute blast.
Days like this at Happy Rolph’s are a reminder of how important accessibility is for families like ours. Lennon could fully participate in every part of the day, from feeding the ducks to playing on the playground, without feeling like she was missing out. Her Edge 3 Stretto power wheelchair made it all possible, allowing her to join in on every adventure with her sister by her side.
As we packed up to head home, Lennon was already talking about her next trip back to Happy Rolph’s. Knowing her adventurous spirit, it won’t be long before we’re back for more fun!
