Boston Bruins

by Jared Wayland

On December 19th, I had the pleasure of watching my beloved Boston Bruins play the Minnesota Wild at the iconic TD Garden in Boston. As a powerchair user, navigating through crowded spaces can often be challenging, but I was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional accessibility features at the TD Garden, which worked seamlessly with my Stretto.

The walk (or roll) from our hotel to the TD Garden was seamless. The well-maintained ramps leading to the main entrance were easily navigable, making my journey from the hotel to the arena pretty much hassle-free.

Upon reaching the arena, the staff not only extended a warm welcome but also demonstrated exemplary training in assisting individuals with mobility challenges. The accessible entrance boasted wider automatic doors and a dedicated, separate queue for chair users, facilitating a smooth entry. The thoughtful design prioritizing inclusivity was truly commendable.

A standout feature of the TD Garden was the designated accessible seating areas. The staff graciously guided me to my seat (almost at centre ice, about 15 rows from the action), which offered an unobstructed view of the game. The spacious seating arrangements allowed me to enjoy the game comfortably without feeling cramped or restricted. The inclusion of companion seating nearby further enhanced the overall experience, enabling my wife and I to share the excitement of the game. It was evident that TD Garden prioritizes providing a welcoming environment for fans with diverse needs.

Navigating through the arena's amenities, including restrooms and concessions, was surprisingly seamless. Accessible restrooms strategically located throughout the Garden were equipped with the necessary accommodations, such as large stalls and counter cutouts, ensuring convenience and comfort for individuals with disabilities.

The team store added to the evening’s highlights, offering a spacious layout that allowed me to wheel around freely and select some sweet Bruins merchandise. The counters at the store were also at an appropriate height for easy transactions, and staff members were readily available to assist with any additional needs. TD Garden’s dedication to making every aspect of the fan experience accessible and enjoyable was apparent.

Attending the Boston Bruins game at the TD Garden was more than just a night of hockey – it was a testament to the strides made in creating an inclusive and accessible environment for all patrons. The thoughtful design, well-trained staff, and unwavering commitment to accessibility at TD Garden set a positive example for other venues to emulate.

My experience as a Stretto user was not only enjoyable but also empowering, knowing that accessibility was a top priority. TD Garden's dedication to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their mobility challenges, can fully participate in the excitement of live sports is truly commendable. As a devoted Bruins fan, I left the arena with great memories (despite the B’s losing in overtime) and a new appreciation for the efforts made to make the TD Garden experience truly accessible for all.
