Quantum Rehab

The Power of a Power Wheelchair

by Marie Pontini

A power wheelchair is a synonym for independence and autonomy for anyone with a progressive illness, a dynamic disability or any other condition that may require one. But it is much more than that!
I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Multiple Sclerosis and my Stretto Edge 3 Quantum Rehab Canada’s power wheelchair is also something that brings me a lot of pleasure and fun!
Most of my friends are using a power mobility aid, like a mobility scooter or a power wheelchair. Together, we have the pleasure of going for long rides, either in nature parks, along the river or on bike paths.
The fact that it's powered by electricity makes it an ideal choice of transportation in nature. Many parks now have accessible trails made of wood or metal, so we can enjoy them at any season.
Not only is it environmentally friendly, but it is also cheap to charge and use. My Stretto Edge 3 allows me to go great distances on one charge, up to 5.5 km/h.
Throughout the summer, we also enjoy the outdoor festivals in downtown Montreal.
A power wheelchair like my Stretto Edge 3 allows me to stay seated comfortably for hours. It can be fast if I need it to be (like on bicycle paths) and the USB charger keeps my phone changed all day long. It may sound weird, but after a few months of using it, it truly feels like my legs. It’s that comfortable and perfectly adapted to my measurements, body shape and needs. Its dimensions are also so small that I don’t take more space in a crowd, and I can use my iLevel to be higher than people standing to have a perfect view of the show!
Having my power wheelchair represents an activity I can always do, like riding a motorcycle. It's a good way to socialize and tag along with my friends, but also to enjoy alone if I prefer a quiet moment.
Even though it has been a few years since I've had my Stretto, I still have a lot of places to discover around my city!
