The season for bonfires, cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes is finally here! From September through the beginning of November, many people enjoy crossing fall traditions and fun fall activities off their bucket lists, trying to get them all in before the end of the season. Maybe you’ve begun compiling your autumn bucket list, full of recipes and activities you’d like to do. However, you aren’t sure if all the events you want to go to are accessible.
There’s fantastic news! Some farms do offer accessible options for their fall events. Even if a place advertises being wheelchair accessible online, we recommend calling the specific place you would like to visit ahead of time to make sure what you want to do actually does accommodate wheelchair users and discuss possible barriers you may encounter while you’re there. Here are some of our favorite classic activities to do either on your own or with your loved ones this year:
Navigating a corn maze is a well-loved activity by many that never gets old. In fact, farms offer different themes for their corn mazes every year. If you enjoy a good scare during the Halloween season, some farms even offer haunted corn maze experiences at night.
Many corn mazes have paths that are both wide and flat enough for a wheelchair to safely travel through. As mentioned before, we still recommend that you call the farm ahead of time to ask if their corn maze is wheelchair accessible.
We highly recommend planning your excursion ahead of time by reaching out to the farm, but we also recommend checking the weather in advance. Typically, the ground in a corn maze is flat, but after a rainstorm, it can quickly become muddy and bumpy, making it both a challenge to navigate with your power chair and easy to get it dirty.
Just like with corn mazes, many farms also offer haunted hayrides throughout the season. However, if you prefer a calmer activity, you can take a ride through the fields during the day to see the beautiful colors, pumpkins and vegetation that the farm has to offer.
Apple picking is a long-old tradition enjoyed by those of all ages, who love browsing the selection of different apple varieties that each orchard offers. If you enjoy baking, there are many delicious recipes for apples for you to try throughout the season. If you prefer taste-testing over baking, you can still enjoy an apple pie or apple cider.
Decorating pumpkins is a wonderful activity for those who prefer to embrace the fall season at home. Pumpkins are very versatile in that you can carve them, paint faces, designs and patterns on them, and even bake the pumpkin seeds when you’re done. Many local markets sell both big and small-sized pumpkins, so you don’t have to go very far to get one.
